The Company today
The Antonio Gades Company is one of the major benchmarks of Spanish and flamenco dance, and the main guardian of the choreographic repertoire of Antonio Gades, a key figure in 20th-century stage creation.
Founded on a body of work that transformed the language of Spanish dance, the Company keeps alive a unique artistic style: refined, austere, and deeply rooted in popular culture, yet also connected to the major currents of contemporary stage thought. Without the need for words, Gades’ work brings to stages around the world a unique choreographic vision, with iconic titles such as Blood Wedding, Fuenteovejuna, Fuego, and Carmen.
Under the artistic direction of Stella Arauzo, for many years Gades’ principal dancer, the Company brings together several generations of artists trained in his style, committed to faithfully transmitting his legacy. Their work has been decisive in preserving, with both rigor and sensitivity, the aesthetic codes of the Gadesian school, while also engaging in dialogue with the challenges of today’s stage scene. Their experience, deep understanding of the work, and leadership have allowed the Company to maintain a distinctive identity—vibrant and in constant evolution.
This continuity has been made possible thanks to the work of the Antonio Gades Foundation, created in 2004 to preserve and disseminate the master’s legacy. Directed by Eugenia Eiriz, Antonio Gades’ widow, and presided over by María Esteve, the choreographer’s daughter, the Foundation supports the Company’s work and develops parallel initiatives such as training courses, publications, exhibitions, competitions, and the creation of a valuable documentary archive—now held at the CDAEM—that helps to frame the full dimension of the Gadesian legacy. Based in Getafe, and with the support of public institutions committed to culture—such as the City Council, the Community of Madrid, and INAEM—the Foundation has consolidated an exemplary model of heritage management centered on the performing arts.
Since its relaunch, the Antonio Gades Company has performed in Spain’s most important theaters—such as Teatro Real in Madrid, Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, Teatro Lope de Vega in Seville, Teatro Arriaga in Bilbao, Teatro Campoamor in Oviedo, Teatro Principal in Valencia, Teatro Calderón in Valladolid, and Teatro de la Maestranza—and has brought Spanish stage art to countries such as Russia, China, Japan, France, Italy, Turkey, Hungary, Georgia, Lebanon, Israel, and Oman.
What audiences see on stage today is the result of a rigorous and sustained effort in artistic preservation and transmission. A first-class choreographic and stylistic legacy that grows from fidelity to Gades’ vision and the strength of a solid cultural project: a living heritage rooted in popular tradition, transcending borders, and projecting itself fully into the future.
